The dramatic rescue of climbers on Taygetos amid bad weather
Eight climbers were trapped in a ravine on Mount Taygetos after slipping on an icy slope and falling about 200 meters during severe weather around noon. Four of them were seriously injured and unable to move. Harsh conditions, including snow, strong winds, and low temperatures, prevented helicopter access, so EMAK (Greece’s elite disaster response and search-and-rescue unit, part of the Hellenic Fire Service) rescue teams carried out a difficult land operation. Using ropes and stretchers, rescuers transported the injured to a mountain shelter, where ambulances were waiting to take them to Sparta Hospital. The remaining four climbers were exhausted but unharmed. The incident highlights both the dangers of mountaineering in extreme weather and the vital role of rescue teams.
