Taxi drivers on strike for third day in a row

Could it be argued that this is another example of Greece trying to stampede its way into the future too quickly?

Ekathimerini News is reporting that taxi drivers are protesting against “tight schedules for transition to electric vehicles. Protesters are angry at the government’s insistence that all new taxis granted an operating license from the start of 2026 must be electric-powered. Taxi driver unions want the deadline for electric transition moved to 2035, arguing that the current network for charging electric vehicles is insufficient.”

Predictably there are subsidies available – The Green Taxi programme can cover up to 40 % of the retail price of an EV taxi, with maximum subsidies around €17,500 plus up to €5,000 for scrapping an old taxi – a total up to about €22,500 in support. Based on these figures, the licensed taxi driver would still have to pay up to €30,000 to go electric and if there are insufficient recharging points, especially in Athens…….

What’s your view?

  1. I have every sympathy with the taxi drivers. Can you estimate how many charging points there will be in the Mani?!
