Kalamata Airport - contract delays, severe staff shortages & safety concerns
Tharros News yesterday reported that Kalamata Airport is facing major staffing, operational contract and maintenance problems as the new travel season begins.
Flight operations have already suffered, with scheduled Thessaloniki flights suspended throughout January and minimal activity at the airport.
The season’s first flight to Zurich is set for February 27, followed by routes to Arlanda, Copenhagen, Munich, Krakow starting in March, though future schedules remain uncertain.
Currently, just six staff members run the airport, without any technicians—there is no electrician or air conditioning specialist – which are explained as critical roles for safe operation of any airport, particularly maintenance in areas containing critical machinery and safety systems.
Since the retirement of the long-term airport manager in 2021, staff numbers have steadily dropped from 16 in 2022 to only 8 in 2025, and now just 6 as of January 2026.
Facilities regularly flood during winter rain, even soaking luggage areas.
The expected transfer of management to the Fraport consortium has been repeatedly delayed, with no clear timeline for Parliament’s ratification of the concession contract.
