Installation of new water desalination plant begins
The Municipal Commission of West Mani has unanimously approved a contract with the Region of Peloponnese and the Regional Development Fund to submit a proposal under the Environment and Energy Programme. The plan involves acquiring, transporting, installing, and commissioning a mobile brackish water desalination plant (container) with a capacity of at least 1,000 m³/day to supply the Lefktro area.
Second unit
West Mani faces serious drinking water shortages due to over-pumping, drought, and saltwater intrusion, particularly in the summer when tourism peaks. To address this, the municipality aims to upgrade and expand water infrastructure to improve supply quality and sufficiency.
Capacity
A first desalination plant is already operational at “Mesa Dolos” in Agios Nikolaos. The new plant will have similar capacity (1,000 m³/day), and will be located outside the settlement at “Agios Myron.” It will process water from a nearby well (110 meters away) and transport the treated water to the distribution tank of Agios Nikolaos via a 730-meter pipeline. The project budget is €694,400.
