Bought fresh fish in Mani recently? If so, it would be great to hear where, when and what you bought. 

It may be surprising to learn that Greece maintains a leading position in fishing production, even at international level, contributing significantly to the development of the Greek economy and providing a living for around 12,000 people.

In 2023, Greek fish farming took the #1 spot in the European Union and despite a fall in stocks, remains the largest producer of sea bass and bream across Europe, as well as the second largest in the Mediterranean, following Turkey. Although 61% of catches are traditionally exported to just 3 countries (Italy, Spain, France), this leaves a significant domestic consumption. 

Is this reflected in local availability and affordability? Across the local Taverna and restaurant menu it sometimes seems that ordering fish is a luxury reserved for high days and holiday celebration – perhaps not for the everday diet.

Its  a dynamic that, to us living in Mani seems to have changed significantly in our lifetime. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.
