The "digital squeeze" continues

Kathimerini reports today that tax authorities have begun emailing vehicle owners who do not have their vehicles insured or have not paid their road tax. At present a 15 day “grace period” from receiving the notice will been granted, following which fines will be imposed directly.

The aim is to gain a picture of vehicles that are circulating uninsured, and whose owners have not paid their road tax or, in addition, have not completed the standard technical inspections (KTEO) which is normally required every two years.

Motorists will be informed via SMS, email or letter, depending on the contact details kept in the state registers. Citizens who have registered their contact details in the National Contact Register (emep.gov.gr) will receive SMS and email from the General Secretariat for Information Systems and Digital Governance, while the rest will be notified by email from the Public Administration Authority. In the rare cases where communication is not possible through any of the aforementioned methods, notifications will be sent by mail.

Interested parties can be informed about the results of the cross-checks concerning their vehicle either through the Gov.gr website in the category “Property and Taxation” and the subcategory “Vehicles,” or directly at oximata.gov.gr. The entry to the new application of the Ministry of Digital Governance is carried out with Taxisnet codes.

Upon the expiration of the 15-day period and the completion of new cross-checks, motorists that did not comply will receive notifications with the confirmed fines. In the case of an uninsured vehicle, the fines will range from 250 to 1,000 euros. The level of fines relating to untaxed and lack of safety testing has not yet been announced.
