Central Kalamata mural nears completion

As the large mural on the Papadimitriou building in Kalamata nears completion, artist Kleomenis Kostopoulos recently discussed his vision with local residents.

Mr. Kostopoulos explained that the mural reflects Kalamata through various symbols, including Maria Callas, whose connection to the city influenced his choice. He acknowledged the mural’s boldness might provoke mixed reactions.

Deputy Mayor Vassilis Papaefstathiou highlighted the project’s significance and noted that the “Mission” team sought a dynamic artwork for the city.

The mural aimed to link culture with the region’s agri-food wealth, and Mr. Kostopoulos was selected for his expertise. Plans for two more murals are underway, inspiring other building owners to consider similar projects.

The event concluded with praise and interest from attendees, while critics remained absent, choosing to voice their opinions only online.

Kleomenis Kostopoulos is a visual artist with numerous exhibitions and works featured in museums and collections in Greece and abroad. Dedicated to promoting contemporary Greek art, he returned to Patras after 20 years to lead the International Arts Festival of Patras-RE-Culture. He also works on cultural policy, development, accessibility for vulnerable groups, and art projects for children.
