A-list appeal for Mani once more
As cameras roll on sets organised across West Mani, no doubt the epic, stormy weather of the past few days is providing both opportunity and difficulty for the crew of “Sweetsick”. Here we take a closer look at the premise of the film and its key actors.
The plot of Sweetsick is an emotionally driven fantasy drama, centering on a complex protagonist (Kate Blanchett) who possesses a unique ability to discern others’ most intimate needs—often at significant personal cost—and chronicles her journey home.
The narrative’s emphasis on a “journey home” underpins the production’s selection of the historically significant and visually rich and evocative landscapes of the Mani Peninsula.
Filming Locations in Messenian Mani
Principal photography for the Greek portion has commenced following initial filming in the UK last month. The schedule in Greece runs from November 4 to November 9, with scenes being shot in the renowned villages of Kardamyli, Trachila, and Petrovouni, as well as along the regional road connecting Agios Dimitrious and Trachila.
In alignment with the film’s central theme, the finale is set within the heart of Mani, culminating in a scene described as one of catharsis and a return to origins.
This setting, rich in both history and mythology, is anticipated to enhance the emotional gravity of Blanchett’s character’s journey.
She stars alongside up and coming 25 year old actor Spike Fern, best known for his appearance in “The Batman” and established London actor Tobias Menzies who carried off an Emmy having played Prince Philip in Netflix’s “The Crown” and attracted broad appeal as “Black Jack” Randall in “Outlander”.
Production teams have established operational bases in Kardamyli and Trachila, working efficiently to leverage the region’s unique natural lighting and architectural elements for this international production.
