Walk 7 : Tigani

Tigani

Possible Route: Agios Kiriaki – ‘Agitria’ – Tigani – Agios Kiriaki

Timing: Totally depends on where you park and which walk/walks you do.

Difficulty: Totally depends on where you park and which walk/walks you do.

Description: A great Deep Mani walk, including a Byzantine church and possible medieval castle as well as very dramatic scenery. The walk on to the ‘Tigani’ causeway is rocky and can be very hot in the summer. In the early morning, the path to the church known as ‘Agitria’  will be shaded by the cliffs behind.

A hired car is necessary. The video that follows is from an article on Patrick Leigh Fermor and gives directions on how to get to the beginning of the walk.

You have 3 choices on where to park, depending on whether you are doing both walks or just one of them.

  1. Parking under the few houses that make up the village of Agios Kiriaki is just a suggestion if you want to avoid the bumpy dirt track. Parking further down is only possible at the end of the track to Tigani as it is not wide enough for two cars to pass.
  1. Decision time. A signpost clearly indicates the turning to Agitria or keep straight on down to Tigani.
  2. Another option for where to park – at the end of another rocky, dirt track. From here to the church is only a 10-15 minute walk.
  3. Unfortunately the church is now locked but it is still a magical place to visit. It was built 800 years ago.

If you just want to walk out across Tigani and park at the very end of the dirt track, allow for around an hour each way if you intend exploring the ruins of the castle/basilica .
