“The first decision determines all others”

Under Tainaron is a fascinating piece of work written by local resident and poet, Kelvin Corcoran, who currently lives in Kato Hora, Milea. It recasts elements of the myths of Orpheus and Eurydice and is rooted in the locations where that mythology originated.  It also explores the relevance of such myths to our present world and the fate of those cast into the underworld and whether their rescue is considered- specifically referring to the often tragic experiences of refugees traversing both the Mediterranean sea and the English channel. Under Tainaron is also about the Orphic power of music and poetry to move us and see things anew.

The story behind Kelvin’s “story” illustrates just one of the many enticing elements of living in this area as a foreigner. Rather than seeing the piece suited to a straightforward poetry reading (with which he is very familiar), he always intended it to be a full performance with musical accompaniment. With relative ease he was able to connect with local musicians and narrators to turn this notion into a reality, resulting in the formation of the Live Poets’ Society and two live performances being scheduled in the area this year- July 17 at the Stoupa Cultural Centre and October 3 at the Mani Lit Fest, Patriko, Stoupa.

In the following in-depth interview, exclusive to members only, Kelvin talks about three main subjects:

– His longstanding connection with Greece and the Mani in particular.

– The background to his interest in and love of poetry.

– The back story to Under Tainaron and The Live Poets’ Society

A little teaser….

The Live Poets’ Society

“This is a huge cultural event for Mani. The pathos and πάθος of Kelvin’s poetry is transformed and heightened by the intensity of the unique soundscape to create an audiovisual masterpiece, and as one of the organisers of the Mani Lit Fest in October, I’m delighted that this performance will be the closing, headline act.”

Theresa, Narrator

“Soon after having some jam sessions at my house where we put music to various literary pieces just for fun, Ben met Kelvin who gave him a copy of “Under Tainaron”. Ben shared it with us and  we were all moved by the poetry and decided to make that our project.  Happily,  Kelvin agreed.  That’s how the Live Poets’ Society was born.”

Paula, Keyboards

“The only public performances I’ve ever been involved with here are playing in bands. This is something completely different. A great experience for me!”

Mat, Narrator

“It is a great pleasure for me to be part of this project. The relevance of its theme cannot be overstated.”
