The “digital transformation” of the Municipality of Kalamata is nearing completion

Big Brother or an inevitable, beneficial progression? All sounding perfectly reasonable?

One of the most important digital transformation projects that the Municipality of Kalamata has implemented to date is being completed , following the unanimous approval of the Final Acceptance Protocol of the  “Digital Transformation Actions of the Municipality of Kalamata” Act  during the 32nd / 2026 meeting of the Municipal Committee of the Municipality of Kalamata, on Monday, August 10, 2026

According to Kalamata Mayor Thanasis Vassilopoulos, its completion is another important step on a path that has already been recognized at the national level. Kalamata has been named  “Smart Town of the Year” at the Best City Awards for two consecutive years, in 2025 and 2026 , confirming that the city’s digital transition is not a piecemeal effort, but part of a stable and coherent strategic plan.

As part of the project, the Municipality receives :

  1. Smart Controlled Parking System
  2. Smart pedestrian crossings, friendly to people with disabilities
  3. Energy management systems for municipal and school buildings
  4. Smart City Guide and Citizen Application
  5.  Air quality measurement network
  6.  Urban green and public spaces management system
  7. Modern  cybersecurity and teleworking infrastructure
  8. Central Unified Data Management and Collection Platform

This latter infrastructure is of particular importance, as it essentially constitutes the  digital “backbone” of the smart city . Different systems and different data sources can now be brought together in a single environment, creating the conditions for the Municipality to obtain a comprehensive picture of the functioning of the city.

The next step is to  interconnect the Central Platform with the Digital Twin of Kalamata , so that data from mobility, energy, the environment, greenery and municipal infrastructure can be utilized in a common digital environment for monitoring, analysis, simulation and better planning.

This is the big step that Kalamata is taking:  from individual “smart” applications to a unified digital city ecosystem .

In a statement regarding the project, Kalamata Mayor Thanasis Vassilopoulos said: “Kalamata is entering the new digital era. With the completion of the Digital Transformation project, we are not content with adopting new technologies, but in essence we are attempting to change in practice the way our Municipality operates. We are creating a city that is more citizen-friendly, more accessible, greener and completely digitally shielded. We are continuing steadily in this direction, utilizing every European and national resource, for a pioneering, sustainable and smart Kalamata.”
