Major rescue operation for a French family in the Viros Gorge
Last night, a French family called 112 and reported that they were trapped in the Vyros Gorge and needed help.
A search and rescue operation was immediately launched, with the outcome fortunately being successful, as after 2.5 hours the French were transported to a safe location.
Firefighters, police officers and GAIA volunteers participated in the operation.
What the people of GAIA point out to visitors is the following:
“We remind visitors to the area: Avoid hiking in canyons and mountain trails when sunset approaches. Always follow the marked paths, have the necessary supplies with you and, in case of emergency, call 112 immediately.”
How GAIA people describe the rescue.
Tonight, a rescue operation was successfully completed for a four-member family from France (parents and two teenage children), who were trapped in a difficult and inaccessible spot in the Vyros Gorge, in the Exochori Municipal District of the West Mani Municipality, after losing the marked path during their hike.
The call to 112 was made at 22:00 and the Kalamata Fire Department, the Kardamyli Police Department and the GAIA Civil Protection Volunteer Association were immediately mobilized.
Despite the darkness and the particularly difficult terrain of the area, rescuers managed, after a coordinated effort, to reach the family. After it was determined that all its members were in good health, they were safely led to the exit of the canyon.
The operation was successfully completed at 00:30, with the participation of 4 firefighters, officers from the Kardamyli Police Department, 12 volunteers from the GAIA Association and 3 citizens, under the coordination of a Fire Department officer.
Warm congratulations to everyone who participated for their impeccable cooperation, professionalism and dedication.
We remind visitors to the area: Avoid hiking in canyons and mountain trails when sunset approaches. Always follow marked trails, carry the necessary supplies with you and, in case of emergency, call 112 immediately.
