Long live Mani! – 200 years since the Battle of Verga
“200 years after the Battle of Verga, we honor a brilliant and glorious page of our history. The fighters of Verga, the heroic Maniates, all the Greeks who gave their souls for Freedom and Democracy,” emphasized the mayor of Kalamata and president of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Peloponnese, Thanasis Vassilopoulos, in the context of yesterday’s anniversary event for the 200th anniversary of the Epic written by the Maniates in Verga.
As the Municipality of Kalamata noted, “on June 22, 1826, at the location of Verga Almyros, the Greeks – mainly Mani and Messinians – defeated the Turkish-Egyptian army of Ibrahim, which until then had terrorized and led to the desolation of the Peloponnese.”
Yesterday, after the celebration of the doxology at the Church of St. Nicholas of Almyros by the Metropolitan of Mani Chrysostomos, a memorial service was held at the monument of the fallen, in Mandra of Almyros. The solemn sermon was delivered by the principal of the Verga Beach Primary School, Stavroula Grousouzakou, while the ceremony continued with the laying of wreaths, a minute of silence and the playing of the National Anthem by the Kalamata Municipal Philharmonic. Honors were paid by a band of the 9th Infantry Regiment. This was followed by the recitation of poems by young students.
