Kalamata Airport: Images of shame
This damning article comes directly from local news outlet Tharros News. Click on the link for more revealing photos.
Referring to these images, Tharros say “Words are unnecessary and negative emotions overflow: shame, slander, to the point where you lower your eyes when you see foreign tourists passing by and looking with disdain at this disgraceful infrastructure.
The tourist season has begun in earnest and we are still waiting for the ratification of the concession agreement by Parliament, which is being postponed from month to month and everything now points to… July!
Even though, according to reports, a consortium was formed for the airport projects… The consortium has officially undertaken nothing and, as everything indicates, this season tourists will see the worst image of the airport.
No water!
We visited the airport over the weekend. The facilities were clean, but the infrastructure was at its worst!
The cafeteria in the central area of the airport is now closed. The tender for its lease was never completed and the Civil Aviation Authority has still not announced any move regarding its operation. And what move is there to make, after all, when the consortium is taking it over “day by day”. Yes, but the season has begun and the flights will soon be landing one after the other and the temperatures will rise!
The temporary contract that was made to operate the cafeteria until the end of 2025 expired and it has been closed since then!
The vending machines, which were announced last year, were installed for a few days and then removed after the Civil Aviation Authority was unable to reach an agreement with their owner.
Also, the cafeteria, after passport/police control, is closed and the place is dilapidated.
Alas, to anyone who gets thirsty or swallows it wrong… Water (at least) is a no-brainer! If you’re lucky, you might find a bottle at Duty Free, otherwise the next option is the taps in the toilets.”
“A few days ago, the INTRAPOWER – EKTER SA – KLX AIRPORT consortium was established, through which the airport’s upgrade, modernization and expansion interventions will be promoted. The INTRAPOWER – EKTER SA scheme emerged as the preferred contractor following a competitive process conducted by the concessionaire, with the participation of four schemes.
The works include the renovation and modernization of existing facilities, the expansion and upgrading of the airport terminal, as well as the construction of a new aircraft parking area covering an area of approximately 50 acres. At the same time, the development of modern IT infrastructure and the creation of new commercial and restaurant spaces are planned, with completion expected in 2028.
All this, of course, if the concession agreement is finally signed and the joint venture takes over Kalamata airport. Until then, we will continue to receive negative ratings and comments from foreign tourists, whose first impression of our region is these images and… water shortages!”
A shameful sight.
“At the time we visited the airport, tourists from the Netherlands and London had just arrived.
They saw an airport in disrepair: rust and water running from walls and ceilings, holes in the walls and abandoned cables. The worst image was at the airport counters, with the basin (also red from its shame) trying to collect the… uncollected items! The sight was shameful.
Unfortunately, the concession contract is not going to be completed in April, nor in May, but apparently not in June either. The information now speaks of July, as the… best possible scenario.”
